The core muscles can have a big effect on your pelvic floor muscles, which means that lower back pain can also be impacted. Today we’re going to explain what the link is between these and how you can improve your pelvic floor.

There are certain groups of people who are more susceptible to experiencing weakness in their pelvic floor. Gynaecological reasons for weakening pelvic floor are the most common, as these problems tend to occur after childbirth and pregnancy. After childbirth, of course there is less of an emphasis on the mother’s health as it’s all about the baby. This is completely normal but it leads to very commonly ongoing issues with loss of core and pelvic floor strength.

A weak pelvic floor can cause issues heavy lifting, problems with digestion or stress incontinence amongst other symptoms. Unless you have one of these problems, you may be less likely to actually train your pelvic floor.

A very common rehabilitation is 10 x long holds and 10 x short holds of your pelvic floor. If you don’t have any noticeable issues with your pelvic floor, it’s worthwhile testing to see if you can do this exercise. You can incorporate the pelvic floor lifts into your core engagement exercise so that you’re engaging the whole section.
