3 Exercises For Rounded Shoulders

Watch The Video

Rounded shoulders and poor posture is a common occurrence nowadays, something equally unpleasant as it is common. Having rounded shoulders is not the sort of posture that exudes confidence, neither is it the sort of posture that is efficient in its biomechanics, placing increased strain in certain areas of the body. Unfortunately, given the demands and habits of modern life, rounded shoulders and poor posture, is a common issue that plagues society.

Although a rather gloomy picture may well be painted, in spite of the simplistic nature of this biomechanical issue, with time changes that take place within the skeletal structure and the muscular system, the permanence of such posture gradually creeps up on us.

There are however simple steps and exercises that can be done to combat the slow degradation of this postural issue to help open out the shoulders, and restore a degree of support for the natural upright posture of us all. Stretching, although not covered in the video above, also plays a role in combatting the slow rounding of our postures.

Strengthening should be the primary focus and by partaking in regular strength-based exercises to work the specific muscles that contribute to effective and desirable posture, in this desirable upright position, we can make significant progress over the medium term.

The benefits of improving your posture are somewhat self evident. Although you will see across the internet comments on how posture is not important or that there is no ideal posture, these statements are flawed and fail to recognise that there are consequences of all postures in the magnification or minimisation of stress and strain on the human body. There are also postures that lend themselves to balance and equal weight distribution and working to emulate these as a natural, resting “status quo” is certainly a goal worthy of pursuit.

With that said, give these three exercises a go to combat your rounded shoulders and make improvements in your own posture starting today!
