What To Expect In The Second Half Of Your First Trimester?

Watch The Video

In the first trimester the baby grows from the size of a little poppy seed (tiny tiny) a group of cells really, to the size of a lemon, that’s around 300x larger! During this time although you may not be able to see any changes externally, there is a lot happening on the internally! The body is producing a surge of hormones, to help the baby grow and the placenta to set, it is these hormones which really begin wreak havoc with your body and how you feel day to day. So let’s get into the three symptoms:

Nausea & Sickness In Pregnancy

You most probably have heard of ‘Morning Sickness’ however did you know that this can last all day? Unfortunately for me my pregnancy nausea seemed to progress as the day went on, the worst time being dinner time! It was dinner that would cause me to be physically sick, and often multiple times in a row! Which was rather unpleasant.

BUT there were a few things that I did to help me through: All things ginger! Especially ginger biscuits seemed to really take the edge off that horrible sick feeling. Eating much more in the early parts of the day, smaller frequent meals. I did feel like I was constantly in the kitchen, eating and eating until mid-afternoon. Going to bed early to sleep through the sick feeling. The sickness goes hand in hand with the food aversions in pregnancy.

Food Aversions In Pregnancy

I was so surprised at how intense my food aversion were, from very early on. Just looking at certain foods, the smell, even watching meal prep videos on social media would make me feel queasy! Some of the worst foods included: Meat (red meat was an absolute no), coffee, onions and garlic, anything with a tomato sauce base so chilli & pasta bolognas were out of the question. Worst of all was when WATER began to make me feel queasy – that was tough!

BUT again here are a few things that helped: Carby, starchy foods, such as bread, cheese, sandwiches, toast, and fruit. Unfortunately in order to just get through every day this is what I found I could manage. Again the smaller, frequent meals earlier in the day. Fresh lemon juice in water!!!! Worked like a charm!

Pregnancy Fatigue

The fatigue experienced in my first trimester was unbelievable, usually a very energetic person, I became a bit of a hermit. Sleeping for 12 hours a day, needing an afternoon nap, and yet I still felt tired and very sluggish. I managed a couple of walks, but no workouts at all. I felt absolutely exhausted the whole time… but don’t worry this changes very soon as you creep into the second trimester! Although these symptoms are fairly common in early pregnancy, the intensity to which they are felt can differ drastically from women to women.
