Wear And Tear In The Back - How To Reduce Degeneration Of The Spine

How To Reduce Degeneration Of The Spine

Degenerative disc disease can be a common diagnosis in the spine, and can be identified under a number of terms such as arthritis, wear and tear, spondylolosis etc. You need to find out as a first port of call where that degeneration is located. Is it covering one area, is it in pockets in the spine? You can only tell these things by seeing them in an X-ray.

The common answer given is that ‘you’re just getting older, it happens to everyone, don’t worry about it’ but it gives you nothing to work with. If it was truly age then you would see the entire spine degenerated, but the vast majority of cases have pockets of degeneration where your posture has led to some areas of the spine wearing quicker than others. The 20 year old is just as likely to be diagnosed with this as the 60 year old.

You need to understand why it has occurred by looking at your posture and then follow targeted exercises that will help relieve the pressure on your spine that an uneven posture causes. You then need to strengthen your postural muscles to get you back into an ideal position and support your spine.
