Back Pain Help So I Can Play Golf.

Thank you for joining us for today’s livestream where we talked about the challenges people face when getting back into golf when you’ve had back pain. We’re going to talk about things you need to be aware of, rehabilitation tips and how to return to the sport.

The biggest problem you face with golf is the flexion and rotation. The fact that you’re slightly bent forwards and twisting for that swing is going to be a big risk factor for developing a back problem. Forward bending opens out the disc, twisting weakens them and then you’re putting a lot of power into that swing. It’s very common to round yourself over the club when hitting the ball rather than leaning forwards while maintaining your natural lordosis in the lumbar spine.

Carrying clubs can also be an issue as they are very heavy. If you’re not used to carrying the weight, then this is going to cause problems.

The terrain can also cause a problem if the area is hilly.

If you’ve got back pain, you need to work through Phases 1-3 of our Back In Shape program. By the time you get to Phase 3 you’ll be much stronger, you’ll have more power and your body will be more resilient to play the sports you enjoy, including golf. When you get back home from a game of golf, reverting back to Phase 1 will help from a maintenance perspective.

When getting back into it, try out the driving range first rather than jumping straight into a game. You should then progress from the longer clubs down to the shorter clubs before going into playing a game of 9 holes and seeing how you’re responding as you go, all the while keeping up with Phase 3 exercises and Phase 1 when you get home.
